Korean Red Ginseng
There has been much interest recently in boosting our immune system. We have seen how Covid has spread quite rapidly, and how it affects people differently. The reason why the effects vary is unknown and probably complex. But a better immune system is probably part of the answer.
A better immune system is an advantage for any situation other than autoimmune disorders, where the immune system works against us. So how do we boost our immune system?
Korean Red Ginseng - This has long been seen as a panacea, the general cure for all. While this is unrealistically optimistic the research has show that it does make us healthier at many levels; Korean red ginseng just seems to make the body function better, mental and physically. So if there is a issue we are in a better position to deal with it.
Ginseng will give us energy that lasts for several hours. This means it is best taken in the morning, and not at night because it will keep us awake.
Echinacea - This is a herb that has been used for centuries to improve the immune system. If taken on a regular basis it seems to prevent/reduce illnesses. If we take echinacea after we are ill it reduces the time we are sick. We can get past a cold after a few days, and have a much lower chance of respiratory infections.
Echinacea is available in capsules or tea. When taken by mouth echinacea does not seem to have any side effects, but it can interact with some prescription medications. Consult a doctor if you are on medication.
Elderberry - This is another herb with a long folk tradition. Like echinacea it seems to help reduce the severity and length of a cold. If nothing else it does contain a decent amount of vitamins, minerals and antioxidants, which are healthy.
Elderberry must be cooked, or it is toxic. But it is usually taken in capsule form.
Vitamin C - Research has show this is healthy. In fact, it is essential, for we will die of scurvy without vitamin C. It may help our immune system to take extra vitamin C. It may help to reduce the symptom of illness. There certainly seems to be no downside to taking extra.
Probiotics - These introduce healthy bacteria into our digestive system. This is certainly beneficial, but whether it boosts the immune system is uncertain. Again, taking probiotic does not seem to have any downside.
